| "The force of nature and the invoking of mystery within its representation are necessary tools to produce an effective painting. As I sculpted in my early 20's, I became aware of an organic and physical connection to the realm of nature which was stimulated by the touching and manipulating of materials. Trees are not on flat planes and it seems unfair to so limit them even by version. Modeling paste has become my moody friend as it deepens my understanding of and connection to nature's messengers, trees. The following poem by Joyce Kilmer best describes my own feelings in expressing the beauty of trees. "I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree. A tree whose hungry mouth is prest against the sweet earth’s flowing breast; A tree that looks at God all day, and lifts her leafy arms to pray. A tree that may in summer wear a nest of robins in her hair; Upon whose bosom snow has lain, who intimately lives with rain." |
